The case is led by Lieutenant-Colonel Kovalev, the first love of Tanya Larina. Cleverly using the discord between Ivan and Tanya, Kovalev inclines Vanya to cooperate with the authorities. Successfully fulfilling the task of Sherov, Tanya-Lada becomes a member of the old antiquarian's house. Tamara, in turn, suddenly admits to Zakharzhevskaya that she long ago dreams of getting rid of her hated relative ...
